Lizzo uses Billboard Music Awards little black dress to send strong message about presidential election

METRO.CO.UK: Lizzo used her red carpet look at the Billboard Music Awards 2020 to deliver a simple political message. Celebrities often use their moment in the spotlight at awards shows to speak on social issues they care about, and the BBMAs on Wednesday night were no exception.

The Juice singer, who recently walked the runway at Rihanna’s Savage x Fenty show, arrived at MGM Grand Las Vegas looking incredible in her little black dress which she teamed with a high ponytail and jewelled earrings. All over her outfit, which was custom Christian Siriano, the word ‘Vote’ was printed in huge white capital letters.

Her nails were painted black to match her look, with ‘Vote’ painted onto her ring finger which she held up for the cameras. Lizzo, real name Melissa Jefferson, didn’t go home empty handed as she took home the top song sales artist award.

In her passionate acceptance speech she urged her fans to, you guessed it, vote in the upcoming presidential election in November. “I just wanted to say I’ve been thinking abut suppression and the voices that refused to be suppressed, and I wonder would I be standing here right now if it weren’t for the big Black women who refused to have their voices be suppressed”, the Good As Hell singer said. “I just wanted to say right now if you are at home watching this and you are thinking about changing yourself to feel worthy, this is your sign to remain true to who you are.

“Lemme tell y’all something: When people try to suppress something, it’s normally because that thing holds power. They’re afraid of your power. There’s power in who you are. There’s power in your voice. ‘So whether it’s through music, protest, or your right to vote, use your power, use your voice, and refuse to be suppressed. Thank you so much to Billboard. I love y’all. God bless, y’all.”
